Guggenheim Museum New York

The Guggenheim Museum is one of the most famous monument in New York City : The Museum is indeed a renowned museum for its collection of Impressionist, Post Impressionist paintings and contemporary art. The building designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright opened its doors on October 21, 1959 (50th year anniversary: October 21, 2009).

History of the museum

Solomon R. Guggenheim started his collection in 1929 helped with German painter Hilla Rebay. After a few years he decided to a foundation dedicated to promotion and encouragement and education in art and its enlightenment of the public. In 1943 he asked Frank Lloyd Wright to design a permanent structure for the collection. But Solomon R. Guggenheim never saw his museum as he died in 1949 ten years before its opening to the public.
