History of the place, collections and exhibitions at the Met

The museum opened its doors on February 1872 (It was originally located at 681 Fifth Avenue). It was founded with the ambition to bring art and art education to the American people. 140 years later the succes can not be denied as it is one of the most visited museum in the world. There is no extra charge for entrance to special exhibitions. The Cloisters, the branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture of medieval is located in Northern Manhattan (Fort Tryon Park).
