The Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous monument in New York City : Located on a 12 acre island, the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986. A limited number of time passes are available from the ferry company each day on a first-come, first-served basis. It is then wise to book your visit or boat tour in advance to make sure to get a ticket for your travel date. Access to the crown of the Statue of Liberty and the copper structure itself remains closed. History of the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island

The sculptors were Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, and Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, engineered the internal structure. The statue is 46.5 meters tall, with the foundation adding another 46.9 meters... In 1984, at the start of the Statue's restoration, the United Nations designated the Statue of Liberty as a World Heritage Site. Although the park's increased popularity resulted in the annual park visitation to reach over 5 million, the tragedy of Sep 11, 2001 resulted in the closure of Liberty Island ... Since Aug 2003 - Visit to pedestal observation deck are permitted.

Prepare your visit to Statue of Liberty : You will be permitted into the base of the Statue of Liberty, but not inside the Statue of Liberty itself (the pedestal) due to security issues. Small backpacks, parcels and bags are permitted on the ferry or Liberty and Ellis Islands. Large packages, backpacks, suitcases and other parcels will not be permitted on the ferry or Liberty and Ellis Islands. All weapons and any dangerous items, including firearms, knives, mace, are strictly prohibited. Visitors and their belongings are subject to inspection. The National Park Service appreciates your patience and understanding of these new security procedures and the additional time they may require. No check-in or locker facilities are available.
